so once setup do these just connect to where you want (like flckr etc) or do they connect to your local pc which controls where it looks for photos?

Yes that's excatly what they do. Once you get it all setup, they maintain their own link to the Internet (as long as your Wifi/Internet connection are working!) and will download new images as and when they are there. For the ones I have seen, you don't need the PC turned on to act as a gateway or anything.

i've got an old laptop that i'm going to turn into a frame. i'll make sure that i put a wifi card or usb on it so that i can ftp new pictures in or something. must be possibke to find some software that will playback a flckr rss feed or something based on keywords i give it... hmmm.
